Aullwood Nature Explorations!

This week we went to Aullwood Audubon Center! We used our five senses to experience nature. Our guide, Miss Nicole took us on a hike through the woods, prairie, and into the nature center.

We could feel the wet dew on the grass, hear cicadas and birds, smell the fresh air, and see the tall grass before we even started our hike! --We decided we would save taste for when we got back to school at lunch ;)

The students found a huge spider web next to the ramp. Miss Nicole showed us how the middle part of the web is sticky to catch prey while the outside is not sticky so the spider doesn't get stuck. How interesting! (That is what we say when we see something new--instead of "Ew, that's gross!" we just call it "interesting.")

We pretended to be trees and dropped leaves from our branches!

And then we each threw a big handful of leaves in the air!

We crossed the creek balancing on the log or

stepping across the rocks.

On the other side, we felt the cool, wet water on our hands.

We also talked about how animals use camouflage to blend into their surroundings. Can you spot the praying mantis in this photo? She was very camouflaged!

Miss Nicole put her into a jar so we could take turns looking up close.

We felt the soft leaves of this plant.

Miss Nicole also gave each student a colored card. The students used their sight to find things on the hike that matched their colored card.

The orange center of this leaf matches her orange card!

We pretended to be some of the animals that would live there. They are flapping their wings like birds  here.

You can barely see it in the picture; however, we found some scat on the trail. We could see that this animal must've eaten something with fur because we could see bits of fur in it's scat! ...How interesting! ;)

We used our sense of smell to smell this walnut.

Here is a trough where animals came to get water a long time ago.

We turned over this log to see what sorts of things called it home.

We found a salamander! He was very fast!

Of course, before heading into the nature center, we needed another leaf throwing party :)

We also got to see and touch a rat snake!

We also learned that snakes don't have eyelids. They sleep with their eyes open! How interesting!

We felt the smooth scales on his body.

We also got to learn a little about turtles and touch his hard shell that helps protect him.
